Families In Religious Education
Orientation Meeting
October 21, 2006
5:30pm

You are invited to join other Holy Spirit Parish families in creating a network of support and community sharing for home-schooling our children under the currently approved Catholic Religious Education Program.

Bring your current textbooks (if possible) and your whole family. There will be groups for ages pre k-1st, 2nd & 3rd grade, 4th-6th grade, 7th&8th grade, 9th-12th grade and adults, with coordinators leading each group.

You and your family are also invited to stay for the Holy Spirit Fellowship Potluck Dinner immediately following this orientation. We will be meeting in the activity center of First Christian Church. First Christian Church is located at the corner of 10th and Nyssa, 2 blocks south of Pecan St. Parking and the entrance door is in the rear.
(Our thanks to First Christian for the use of their facilities.)

The FIRE program is an exciting option that is available to your family for Religious Education. It will have caring volunteers that have years of experience in Religious Education. All are invited to join and help, if interested - you don't have to have children to participate.

Also, please remember the Upper Valley meeting to End the Death Penalty:

St Ann's Catholic Church Hall
Monday, October 16, 2006
710 E. Lucas
Pharr, TX
7:30 PM

You may never get another chance to meet and hear Rev. Carroll Pickett or Dave Atwood again. Don't miss this great opportunity!

Just a clarification regarding FIRE - this is catholic religious education. We are not joining a program at First Christian Church. First Chirstian Church has generously allowed us meeting space for both FIRE and Fellowship Dinner since we are unable to use any facilities at our own parish.

Kanickers,
Let me stray from the badness of the bishop and Brum for a moment and comment on your Iraq Body Count link. A recent study in the distinguished British medical journal Lancet estimates that 655,000 Iraqis (1 of every 40), mostly civilians, have died as a result of the U.S. invasion. This war death toll would be equivalent to some 7.6 million war dead in the United States, with our population of nearly 300 million.

The Body Count site only lists those deaths for which certifiable witness is given, hence the big difference. Because of the dangerous and deteriorating situtaion in Iraq these reports, always slim, are harder and harder to come by.

We, the People of the United States are responsible for these deaths; after all, we live in a democracy, a government of we the People. We, and most especially the Church, should be in the streets demanding an end to the carnage. WWJD indeed? Now, back to the badness of the bishop and Brum.

You are exactly correct, Guy. We have no way of knowing the REAL number of deaths that are the result of the Iraq war. The really sad thing is that our Bishop tries to justify this war as a "just war" under the guidelines of the Catholic Church! We should all be up in arms over that!

Let me understand this, parishioners from Holy Spirit parish need to go to another church to home-school their children in religious education because their pastor at Holy Spirit will not let them them use a meeting room at their own church?
